Coinbase Expands Beyond Crypto with Stock Trading and Prediction Markets

Coinbase recently announced plans to become the “Everything Exchange,” aiming to combine traditional finance with cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies. The new features include U.S. stock trading, prediction markets, easy-to-use derivatives, and a global launch of the Base app in more than 140 countries. 

CEO Brian Armstrong shared a vision of a single platform where users can trade all types of assets. These changes aim to lessen reliance on crypto volatility and increase competition with platforms like Robinhood.

Coinbase Becomes an “Everything Exchange”  

Coinbase has begun offering stock trading for U.S. users. The move allows traders to buy and sell a wide range of popular stocks and ETFs directly on the app. Trades are commission-free, available 24 hours a day, five days a week, funded through USD or USDC. The initial offerings will focus on high-market-cap stocks, with plans to expand to thousands more. 

The exchange has also partnered with Kalshi to offer prediction markets, enabling users to trade on events such as elections and sports for as little as $1. Users can now view all their positions in one portfolio and can expect support across multiple platforms in the future. Additionally, Coinbase has improved the trading interfaces for futures and perpetuals, giving users instant access to all Solana assets via the Jupiter aggregator. 

Coinbase now offers a helpful feature called Coinbase Advisor that provides personalized investment portfolio advice. The platform also offers business tools, including Coinbase Business and custom stablecoins. These tools combine traditional assets with the benefits of blockchain technology.

Global Launch of the Base App  

In addition to these new features, the Base App, built on Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, is now available in over 140 countries. The app is marketed as an “everything app” that combines social feeds, trading, payments, and mini-apps. Users can share content through platforms like Farcaster and Zora. 

The app makes their contributions tradable assets. Key features include real-time trading with friends, copy trading, instant USDC transfers, and access to games and DeFi tools. Active users earn rewards on their USDC balances. The app offers encrypted messaging and community tools to help users connect online. 

Until December 21, 2025, users can earn USDC rewards by signing up, engaging, trading, and referring others while following local laws. The expansion aims to connect social media with economic value and supports Coinbase’s goal to provide an easy and rewarding online experience worldwide.
