DeFi Protocol Garden Finance Loses $10.8M to Exploit

Following the hack, the Garden Finance team has sent an on-chain message to the exploiter, offering a 10% bounty.

In a recent development, Garden Finance, a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform that enables the transfer of native Bitcoin across different blockchain networks, was targeted by an exploit on Thursday. The security breach resulted in a loss of $10.8 million. A few on-chain security firms, including Cyvers Alerts, reported this incident via an X post some minutes after the incident.

Garden Finance Hacked for $10.8M

According to on-chain data, the exploiter primarily stole Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), USDC, and USDT, and a few other digital assets. Following the theft, the hacker swapped the proceeds for ETH.

While Cyvers Alert reported $6 million earlier, on-chain scam hunter ZachXBT noted a few hours later that the exploit resulted in about $10.8 million loss on multiple chains. Zach also noted that the platform has previously displayed vulnerabilities.

A few days ago, he realized that over 25% of transactions on the platform were linked to funds stolen from previous crypto hacks. This includes the massive $1.4 billion Bybit exchange hack earlier this year and the Swissborg exploit. He also alleged that Garden Finance has been ignoring victims for returning fees.

$1.08M Bounty

Following the hack, an account linked to the Garden Finance team sent an on-chain message to the wallet address associated with the exploit, requesting the return of the stolen funds. The message also included a 10% reward to the hacker for helping the project identify and fix the vulnerability.

“We are fully committed to resolving this situation peacefully and ensuring that no further harm is done. If you choose to return the stolen assets and help us understand the exploit, we will reward you with 10% of the total value recovered. Our intent is to address this issue with cooperation, not punishment,” the message added.

Meanwhile, Garden Finance has joined the unending list of crypto hack victims. A recent survey reveals that over 80% of crypto users have, at some point, been affected by a crypto exploit.
