Japanese bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet has purchased an additional 5,419 BTC worth over $630 million, its co-founder, Simon Gerovich, disclosed in a post on X dated September 22, 2025. The acquisition came amid a broader downturn in the crypto market.

Notably, this marks Metaplanet’s highest-ever BTC purchase since it adopted the leading cryptocurrency as its primary reserve in August 2024 as a hedge against the devaluation of the Japanese Yen (JPY).
Metaplanet Now Holds 25,555 BTC
With the latest purchase, the Japanese Bitcoin treasury company now holds 25,555 BTC, solidifying its fifth position on the world’s list of top institutions holding bitcoin, according to data from Bitcoin Treasuries Net.
Over time, Metaplanet’s average bitcoin acquisition price has settled to $106,065 per bitcoin, and it has spent approximately $2.71 billion on bitcoin purchases within 13 months to attain this feat. It has also achieved a BTC Yield of 395.1% year-to-date 2025.
Notably, to finance its latest bitcoin acquisition, Metaplanet conducted an international common shares offering to qualified investors, issuing 385 million new shares to raise approximately $1.4 billion for BTC shopping. Out of which, the company has only spent $632.5 million. Thus, the market expects further purchase announcements in the coming business weeks.
BTC Dips Below $112,000
A few hours after Metaplanet’s massive bitcoin purchase announcement, the crypto asset suffered a sudden crash, dropping to $111,800 according to data from CoinMarketCap. At the time of writing, BTC was exchanging hands at $112,550.
Consequently, many bullish traders with open long leverage positions were forced out of the market. CoinGlass liquidations tracker shows that over 400,000 traders have collectively lost $1.70 billion in the past 24 hours. The most significant single loss was $12.74 million, which a trader lost on a BTC-USDT-SWAP.
