The total unrealized profit across all bitcoin (BTC) holders has climbed to a record $1.4 trillion, according to on-chain analytics platform Glassnode. Notably, the surge reflects the sharp price increase in recent months and has sparked debate over potential market responses.

Although such high levels of paper profits may imply looming selling pressure, opinions are mixed on whether it will materialize. Glassnode highlights that similar profit peaks have often preceded waves of profit-taking during past bull runs.
Some Say It’s Not Time Yet
Despite the massive headline number, some observers argue the market may still have room to run. A key argument comes from those analyzing the Market Value to Realized Value (MVRV) ratio, which currently sits at 2.26.
Historically, bitcoin bull markets have seen cycle tops when the MVRV ratio exceeded 3.7, with long-term holders seeing peaks above 12. By comparison, the current level appears moderate, suggesting there may be room for further upside.
As one user pointed out, high nominal profits alone don’t signal imminent distribution. They argue that on-chain metrics like MVRV indicate the market hasn’t yet entered the final phase of the cycle.
Others Urge Caution
Still, some argue that historical thresholds may not hold in this cycle. One critic recalled the 2021 peak, when similar confidence in on-chain metrics gave way to sharp corrections.
They pointed to the Net Unrealized Profit/Loss (NUPL) metric, which stalled at 0.65, below the typical euphoria threshold of 0.75. That failure marked the start of a prolonged downturn.
Cautioning against blind trust in historical ratios, the user emphasized that market dynamics evolve. They warned this cycle’s distribution phase could arrive earlier than expected.
With BTC hovering near its all-time highs, sentiment remains divided. The $1.4 trillion in unrealized gains reflects both opportunity and risk, keeping bulls and bears alert.
