Base App to End Creator Rewards Program — Here’s Why

Base App is implementing significant changes to its platform, all geared towards its decision to focus entirely on tradeable assets and on-chain activity.

Base network

The Coinbase-owned Base App is sunsetting its creator rewards program before the end of this month. As the name implies, the program has helped the project compensate users who have contributed significantly to the community’s growth.

According to a tweet from the official Base App X account, the Creator Rewards program will end on February 15, with final payouts scheduled for February 18. The team has paid more than $450,000 to at least 17,000 creators.

“We’re grateful for all the creators who helped us build so far, and will be sharing new ways we’ll reward the Base App community soon. We’re just getting started building the best trading experience on-chain,” the team stated.

Base App Transitions to Trading-First

The sunset of the Creator Rewards program comes as Base App implements significant platform changes. The project has decided to focus entirely on trading on-chain. This means the app is transitioning from a social-first platform to a purely trading platform.

Last year, Coinbase introduced Base App as an all-in-one platform that integrates a wallet with social, trading, chat, and payment functions. The social feed is powered by the decentralized social media platform Farcaster. Farcaster’s underlying technology provided a talk feed that allowed users to interact with one another and with social networks.

However, as the shift to a trading-first platform begins, Base App will remove the talk feed and focus solely on tradeable assets and on-chain activity. This does not mean that the app will completely cut ties with the Farcaster ecosystem; Base App will still support the decentralized social media platform alongside other networks.

Sunsetting the Base App Talk Feed

Base builder Jesse Pollak commented on the latest development, commending Farcaster for its contribution to the platform’s growth. He urged users to flow back to the Farcaster app and help build the economy there, insisting that the Base App had always been an imperfect client for the decentralized finance ecosystem.

Pollak revealed that he was the biggest advocate for bringing Farcaster content into the Base App. Even as the talk feed is turned off, he still believes in a multi-client world. However, Base App intends to do less, better, by focusing on tradeable assets.

“When you open @baseapp, you should know exactly what you’re getting, and we’re focused on making it the best place to find and trade every asset,” the creator concluded.
