Arthur Hayes’ BitMEX Set to Permanently Shut Down

BitMEX said it completed more than 11 years of operations without losing customer assets to hacks.

Arthur Hayes

BitMEX, one of the most influential exchanges in the crypto industry, has announced that it will permanently shut down on September 23, 2026. The decision follows a strategic review conducted by HDR Global Trading Limited, the company that owns and operates the platform.

The closure marks the end of an important chapter in the crypto industry. However, BitMEX disclosed via its blog that user funds are secure and has allowed time for orderly withdrawals.

BitMEX Sunsets After 11 Years

When BitMEX launched in 2014, crypto trading was still in its infancy, and professional derivatives markets were barely established. The exchange quickly set itself apart by introducing the perpetual swap, a leveraged trading product that became one of the most widely used instruments in digital asset markets.

Over the years, BitMEX has evolved into one of the most recognized names in crypto derivatives trading. However, the exchange has faced significant challenges through various market cycles, including periods of extreme volatility.

As a result, it has lost substantial market share in derivatives trading to larger competitors like Binance and Bybit, with its trading volumes and open interest now representing only a fraction of those industry leaders.

In addition, BitMEX has dealt with past regulatory and legal issues, including money laundering charges in 2020, which led to a guilty plea and fines related to shortcomings in its anti-money laundering (AML) and know your customer (KYC) practices.

The recent departure of key executives in mid-2026 has further unsettled the exchange as it seeks to cut costs and become more attractive to potential buyers.

Operations Continue Until Sept 2026

Company executives have described their decision to close the platform as difficult and emotionally significant. However, after assessing the company’s prospects and the broader market conditions, they concluded that shutting down was the best path forward.

Notably, unlike many industry rivals that have experienced significant security breaches, BitMEX said it successfully operated for over 11 years without losing customer assets to hacks.

The exchange has already stopped accepting new account registrations and is now preparing for an orderly shutdown of its trading activities. The exchange will continue its operations until September 23, but users are strongly encouraged to close their positions and withdraw their funds as soon as possible.

Beginning August 26, the platform will implement restrictions that will prevent traders from opening new positions. BitMEX also stated that it may gradually force-close positions before the final shutdown to ensure a smooth winding down of markets.

The closure adds to a growing list of notable exchanges that have made similar decisions in the past.
