Altvest Capital, a publicly listed financial services and solutions firm in South Africa, has taken a step forward to introduce institutional bitcoin investment to Africa. According to Bloomberg, the company has announced plans to invest $210 million in establishing a strategic bitcoin reserve.
Notably, Altvest has become the first African company to make such a pro-crypto move. Following the Bitcoin treasury plan, Altvest has rebranded to Africa Bitcoin Corporation.

Africa’s First Bitcoin Treasury Company
According to Altvest, Africa has not kept pace with the intense institutional bitcoin adoption wave despite its strength in many other aspects of life. Thus, the company plans to spearhead BTC adoption on the continent with its latest company developments and updates.
“Bitcoin changes everything. Sovereignty over our wealth, borderless, permissionless… Africa Bitcoin Corporation is not just a company, it’s a movement, a mission to give over a billion Africans access to sound money, to build the largest treasury on African soil. Bitcoin was made for Africa and Africa is ready,” the firm highlighted.
Meanwhile, based on a February 2025 report, AltVest highlighted that its BTC adoption program would help protect shareholders’ investments from the risks associated with unstable economic conditions and ensure access to a globally trusted store of value.
Remarkably, Africa has proven to be fertile ground for crypto adoption, with approximately 43.5 million Africans holding crypto on the continent. Moreover, Nigeria ranks second in the world’s list of top crypto countries despite regulatory roadblocks.
Institutional Bitcoin Investors Grow Across Continents
Notably, Altvest’s goals follow in the footsteps of American investment firm Strategy, which opened the door for corporate bitcoin investment in 2020. Strategy has consistently held the leading position in the crypto market since then. Concluding a recent purchase, it spent $217 million to boost its stash by 1,955 bitcoins. Hence, it holds 638,460 BTC worth over $71.5 billion.
The bitcoin adoption wave has also blown to Asia. Japanese stock exchange-listed company, Metaplanet, takes the lead with its 20,136 BTC reserve worth over $2.2 billion. Other firms on the continent, such as DigiAsia and Sora Ventures, are also following this trend.
Meanwhile, European firms are not being left behind. Renowned brokerage firm K33 and digital services company The Smarter Web have also adopted bitcoin as a primary reserve asset.
