World Liberty Financial (WLFI), a crypto project backed by the Trump family, has been one of the most talked-about cryptocurrencies over the past 48 hours. This is due to its recent token unlock, exchange listing, and price surge.
However, market metrics indicate that the asset is currently on a downward spiral, with its price plummeting severely. According to on-chain data from the price-tracking website, CoinGecko, the Trump family-backed asset has dropped by 20% since its debut. This indicates that investors are rapidly selling their WLFI holdings on the open market.
WLFI’s Token Unlock
In September 2024, Donald Trump, a presidential candidate at the time, announced that he and his sons would launch a decentralized finance (DeFi) project and stablecoin. A few days later, World Liberty Financial debuted, subsequently followed by the governance token, WLFI.
Investors accumulated millions of dollars worth of the WLFI token. Notably, the Trump family holds a significant chunk of the digital asset. However, these tokens were not tradeable on the open market since October 2024 when they were acquired.
Fast-forward to September 1, 2025, World Liberty Financial announced that 24.67 billion WLFI tokens will be unlocked as the digital asset enters the spot market on various cryptocurrency exchanges.
The tokenomics entail that 10 billion units are allocated to the project’s team, while 7.8 billion tokens are reserved for ALT5 Sigma. This blockchain-based company spent $1.5 billion to acquire 7.5% of WLFI’s total supply to build a crypto treasury. Another 2.9 billion tokens have been allocated for liquidity and marketing purposes. The final 4 billion WLFI tokens are meant for public sale participants.
On Monday, the DeFi project announced that it has secured a market listing on the leading cryptocurrency exchange, Binance. Shortly after, other centralized and decentralized crypto exchanges announced spot listing of the crypto asset. These include KuCoin, Bybit, Upbit, Gate, Bithumb, Coinbase, Byreal, Uniswap, PancakeSwap, Meteora, and Raydium.
In anticipation of the token listing, derivatives trading of the WLFI token soared significantly, showing strong investor interest.
Price Tumble on First Day of Trading
Typically, whenever a crypto project unlocks a massive quantity of its token, the token experiences a brief price pump. A rapid price decline then accompanied this, as many traders dumped their tokens onto the market.
To curb the spread of sudden market selloffs, World Liberty Financial’s development team disclosed that only a small portion of the tokens will be tradeable upon launch.
The project’s team also proposed that “100% of fees earned by WLFI’s protocol-owned liquidity (POL) be used for buyback” and token burns. The goal is to increase scarcity for the cryptocurrency and potentially boost its price.
However, this did not stop the crypto token from experiencing a downward spiral. Over the past 24 hours, WLFI experienced a significant price surge, reaching an all-time high of $0.3313. After a few hours of trading, the digital asset dropped to a depth of $0.2106.
At the time of writing, WLFI exchanged hands at $0.246, representing a price decline of over 20%. The price drop is heavily reflected in its 24-hour traded volume, which has grown to over $2.92 billion at press time.
