Uniswap Unveils Ethereum Layer-2 Unichain To The Public

Unichain plans to reach 250 milliseconds, unlocking the next generation of markets for users and builders with one-second block times.

Uniswap Labs has launched its Ethereum layer-2 (L2) network, Unichain. This network is designed to enhance the speed and efficiency of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. The announcement marks its debut in the competitive L2 ecosystem.

The platform noted that users can now swap, bridge, and provide liquidity on Unichain directly from the Uniswap web app and in the latest version of the wallet.

Unichain offers several performance enhancements, including one-second block times, with a target of reaching 250 milliseconds. Additionally, the platform noted that since the testnet was deployed in October, users and developers have processed over 88 million test transactions and 12 million test smart contracts on Unichain.

Unichain To Enable Fast Transactions

According to the platform, blockchains such as Unichain are crucial in accelerating blockchain adoption among crypto traders, digital asset creators, and institutions. They help reduce congestion on Ethereum by enabling faster transactions, lower fees, and a more seamless experience across different blockchains.

Furthermore, the platform explained that this translates to more affordable and faster trading, access to integrated stablecoins like USDC, and enhanced cross-chain swapping capabilities for everyday crypto users.

Commenting on the latest development, Founder and CEO of Uniswap Labs, Hayden Adams, said:

“Unichain is built differently. “We’re here to make DeFi faster, cheaper, more decentralized, which is why we launched Unichain to be permissionless from day one.”

The platform, built on the Optimism Superchain, offers several benefits. During its initial months, it eliminates interface fees for swaps. It also integrates native USDC through Circle, enabling seamless transactions. Additionally, the platform includes permissionless fault proofs, allowing anyone to challenge transactions. With gas fees that are 95% cheaper compared to Ethereum, it provides a cost-effective and user-friendly experience.

Unichain To Introduce Validation Network

The platform further highlighted that anyone can help maintain the chain’s integrity through permissionless fault proofs, a feature that enables anyone to challenge transactions. The platform also revealed plans to introduce a Validation Network later this year to allow public block verification.

“As the first L2 to launch as a Stage 1 rollup, this means that Unichain is committed to decentralization on day one,” the platform wrote.

The platform seeks to address common blockchain challenges such as high gas fees, slow transactions, and complex cross-chain operations while upholding Ethereum’s core principles of openness, permissionlessness, and decentralization.

Meanwhile, following this development, the Uniswap native token (UNI) was down 5.32% over the last 24 hours and 30% over the past 30 days.
