President Donald Trump Pardons CZ Binance

According to WSJ, Trump signed the pardon on Wednesday following months of efforts by Zhao to boost the Trump family’s own crypto company.

U.S. President Donald Trump has granted an official pardon to former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, popularly known as CZ. According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Trump signed the pardon on Wednesday following months of efforts by Zhao to boost the Trump family’s own crypto company.

The White House confirmed the pardon on October 23, 2025, calling it “a step toward restoring innovation and leadership in digital finance.” The decision marks one of the most controversial acts of clemency in Trump’s second term.

From Conviction to Clemency

CZ’s legal troubles stem from a 2023 plea deal in which he admitted to failing to maintain an effective anti-money laundering (AML) program at Binance. The settlement cost Binance a staggering $4.3 billion, and CZ personally paid tens of millions in fines. He was also sentenced to four months in prison, which he served before being released.

After completing his prison sentence, CZ remained barred from managing Binance operations — until now. The presidential pardon changes that. It clears the way for him to legally return to the company he built from a small startup into a global financial powerhouse.

Still, if Zhao stays true to his remarks from last December, he’s unlikely to reclaim the CEO title. At the time, he made it clear he had no intention of returning to Binance’s top post. Instead, CZ has redirected his energy toward new ventures, primarily investing in and developing his digital education platform, Giggle Academy.

Presidential Pardon Stirs Debate

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump had “exercised his constitutional authority by issuing a pardon for Mr Zhao. He said this while criticizing the former Biden administration for its attitude towards cryptocurrency.

However, critics argue that the pardon raises serious ethical concerns. Observers have questioned the decision, noting its timing alongside earlier reports of financial links between the Trump family and Binance. In fact, a WSJ article alleged that the crypto billionaire had connections to the Trump family’s crypto ventures, a claim CZ has strongly denied.

CZ’s pardon is the latest in a series of pardons Trump has given to business leaders convicted of white-collar crimes. Earlier this year, he granted pardons to the founders of the crypto exchange BitMEX for similar anti-money laundering violations.
