Three Reasons Why the NFT Market Cap Surpassed $5 Billion

Market growth within the CryptoPunks and Pudgy Penguin ecosystems contributed to the recent surge in the NFT market.

The non-fungible token (NFT) market recently recorded a significant milestone, surpassing $5 billion in market capitalization.

According to on-chain data from CryptoSlam, NFT sales volume soared to over $43.6 million, representing a 173.5% increase within the past 24 hours. This market uptick comes despite numerous talks about the NFT market being dead.

Reason One: CryptoPunks’ Mass Acquisitions

Several factors contributed to the recent surge in the NFT market. A few hours ago, an unknown trader acquired 45 CryptoPunk NFTs for 2,080 ETH (worth $7.8 million) on the secondary marketplace.

For context, CryptoPunks is a 10K-piece pixelated NFT collection built on the Ethereum network. Introduced in 2017 by Larva Labs, it was the first NFT project ever launched. Over the years, the CryptoPunk project has undergone several changes in ownership. Since May, the Infinite Node Foundation, an American non-profit organization, has been the owner of the NFT collection’s IP rights.

News about CryptoPunk NFT sales demonstrates bullish interest in the pioneering NFT collection. Notably, past reports have revealed that some traders have purchased a single CryptoPunk for significantly higher amounts. For instance, a report from October 2024 stated that one of the pixelated NFTs sold for $56.3 million.

On-chain data shows that CryptoPunks’ floor price is currently 47.75 ETH (worth over $180,300). Aside from this particular trader who raked in 45 pixelated collectibles, an additional 94 CryptoPunks were sold on the secondary marketplace. The project’s 24-hour traded volume currently sits at $23.9 million, representing an 8,835% uptrend.

Reason Two: Pudgy Penguins Fuel Market Surge

Another factor that propelled the surge in the NFT market is the increasing engagement with the Pudgy Penguins project.

Over the past few months, the penguin-themed NFT collection has garnered massive attention within the crypto industry and beyond. The project’s team has spread the IP across various platforms. For instance, a recent tweet revealed that over 250 crypto brands have set a Pudgy Penguin NFT as their profile picture on X or other social media platforms.

Since July 19th, the Pudgy Penguins team has publicized the project’s presence in Malaysia ahead of the two-day Malaysia Blockchain Week event, which started on July 21st.

These engagements with Pudgy Penguins have reflected on the on-chain market performance of the project’s NFT collection and its crypto, PENGU. At the time of writing, its floor price was 16.37 ETH, while its 24-hour traded volume was 1,857 ETH, representing a 312% increase.

On the other hand, PENGU ranked among the trending cryptocurrencies on the price-tracking platform CoinMarketCap. It was trading at $0.0384 at press time, indicating a 24.9% uptrend over the past 24 hours.

Reason Three: Broader Crypto Market Uptrend

The broader crypto market’s performance is the third driver behind the surge in the NFT market.

For most of the year, the crypto market has been experiencing significant uptrends. This year, bitcoin has achieved various all-time highs (ATHs), with its current peak surpassing $123,000. ETH, the underlying asset of the Ethereum network, which hosts most NFT projects, including Pudgy Penguins and CryptoPunks, has surged above $3,800. This represents a mild 2.2% increase within the past 24 hours.

With the prices of these cryptocurrencies rising, investors have fresh cash to spend on the NFT market.
