Spanish Red Cross Taps Privacy-Focused Blockchain for Aid Distribution

The Spanish Red Cross is embracing the future of humanitarian aid with RedChain, a blockchain platform that delivers assistance quickly, securely, and privately. Designed in partnership with Billion Networks, the system utilises privacy-focused blockchain technology to safeguard beneficiaries while maintaining transparency for donors.

Traditional aid methods, like paper vouchers and prepaid cards, can be slow and cumbersome. Now, RedChain replaces them with digital aid credits stored in a mobile wallet. Recipients spend these credits at participating merchants using QR codes, which simplifies the process and reduces the risk of fraud.

A Digital Aid System Built on Privacy

What sets RedChain apart is its approach to privacy. The system does not store personal or biometric data on the blockchain. Instead, it records transaction proofs, timestamps, and integrity checks publicly. Sensitive information such as names, addresses, and case records remains securely within the Red Cross’s internal systems. This design allows aid administrators and donors to verify transactions and prevent fraud without identifying individual recipients.

Furthermore, the system functions as a verification layer rather than a surveillance tool. Recipients carry proof of eligibility in their wallets and reveal only what is necessary for each transaction. By separating identity from transaction verification, RedChain ensures that people can access aid without fear of being tracked or stigmatized. This is particularly important for vulnerable populations, who may be hesitant to engage with traditional aid programs due to privacy concerns.

Transparency Meets Humanitarian Accountability

RedChain also improves accountability for donors and humanitarian organizations. Every transaction generates a cryptographic record that can be audited to confirm that funds reach their intended destination. 

At the same time, the system removes barriers for recipients without bank accounts. It delivers aid directly to mobile wallets, expanding financial access. Moreover, the Spanish Red Cross emphasizes that RedChain combines transparency with dignity.

“People seeking assistance shouldn’t have to choose between getting help and protecting their privacy. We designed this system so donors can verify their contributions made a real difference, and beneficiaries can access support without fear of being tracked, profiled, or stigmatized,” Francisco López Romero, CTO at Red Cross, said.

By implementing a privacy-first blockchain system, the organization is setting a new example for how emerging technology can make assistance faster, safer, and fairer. This approach helps those who need it most without compromising their privacy.
