Travelers can now use popular digital currencies such as BTC, ETH, USDC, and others for booking flights online, ensuring a smooth reservation process.

Skylux Travel, a United States-based luxury and business travel service provider, has launched a new digital payment platform in collaboration with Triple-A, a licensed cryptocurrency payment firm in the United States.

The initiative aims to offer tech-savvy customers a seamless and secure way to book flight tickets using cryptocurrencies.

Introducing Crypto Payments

According to the travel service provider, in the first half of 2024, global cryptocurrency ownership increased by 6.4%, from 580 million users in December 2023 to 617 million in June 2024. The trend is primarily driven by younger generations adopting new financial technologies. In response to the demand, the travel industry has begun to adapt, with Skylux Travel among those in the luxury sector.

The decision to introduce crypto payments was driven by rising demand for more diverse payment options. Travelers can now use popular digital currencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), USD Coin (USDC), and others for booking flights online, ensuring a smooth reservation process.

To use this payment method, customers must select their preferred digital currency. Once the transaction is verified on the blockchain, Skylux Travel sends an email confirming the flight details and reservations. Triple-A handles the entire process, including Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, crypto-to-fiat conversions, and compliance checks, to safeguard users against market volatility.

Crypto in the Travel Sector

Eric Barber, CEO of Triple-A, commented on the development, noting that the adoption of digital currencies in the travel sector is growing as more customers seek flexible and innovative payment solutions. He highlighted that the partnership with Skylux Travel aims to meet these demands and establish new standards for convenience and security in luxury travel.

Skylux Travel is not the only company integrating crypto payments. For instance, the Asian ride-hailing app TADA recently launched a Telegram-based mini-application that facilitates smooth crypto transactions between riders and customers on The Open Network (TON) blockchain.

Similarly, payment platform Stripe announced in April that it would enable businesses to accept payments using the USDC stablecoin. Users can transfer and receive USDC on popular blockchains, including Solana, Ethereum, and Polygon.

This marks a shift for Stripe, which had stopped accepting Bitcoin payments in 2018 due to concerns over volatility. The company’s decision to reintroduce crypto payments suggests confidence in the market’s maturity, driven by the increasing popularity of stablecoins.
