SharpLink Gaming, Inc., one of the leading corporate holders of Ethereum (ETH), has initiated a transfer of approximately $145 million to an over-the-counter (OTC) wallet operated by Galaxy Digital, a cryptocurrency investment firm.
The recent transfer appears to be part of a large-scale purchase of ETH, indicating renewed institutional confidence in the world’s second-largest crypto by market capitalization.
ETH Sees Renewed Strength
While SharpLink has yet to release an official statement regarding the transaction, the sheer size of the transfer and its destination strongly point to a strategic ETH acquisition rather than routine treasury management.
The timing also raises eyebrows. Ethereum has recently seen increased momentum following the approval and inflow into spot ETH ETFs, alongside broader signs of institutional adoption.
Furthermore, market watchers suggest that the gaming company may be positioning itself ahead of another surge in the ETH price or preparing to leverage Ethereum’s infrastructure more directly in its operations, particularly as the asset reaches a new milestone.
Earlier this week, the altcoin reached a price mark of $3,765.45, significantly lower than its 2021 high of $4,400. However, the asset has seen better days and is showing strong signs of something big despite the current market decline, particularly bitcoin (BTC).
As of the time of publication, ETH was changing hands at $3,741.35, representing a 0.5% increase, according to data from CoinGecko. The digital asset also boasts a trading volume of over $32.1 billion and a substantial market cap of $451.5 billion.
Institutions Turn to ETH & Other Altcoins
Meanwhile, Galaxy Digital, led by Mike Novogratz, has become one of the go-to platforms for large crypto transactions, particularly those looking to minimize market slippage. OTC desks enable high-net-worth and institutional investors to execute sizable trades without directly affecting prices on public exchanges.
The transfer is further evidence of the growing reliance on the investment firm’s OTC infrastructure for substantial crypto transactions, especially among firms seeking to accumulate or rebalance their portfolios discreetly. Recently, the firm made history. It carried out the most significant notional BTC deals.
Interestingly, the transaction involved the transfer of more than 80,000 BTC, valued at over $9 billion, from a Bitcoin holder from the Satoshi era. The transfer marked a milestone for the investment company.
Notably, the move comes amid a broader institutional pivot toward Ethereum. While BTC remains the most preferred crypto for institutions, altcoins like ETH, SOL, and BNB are gaining traction.
For instance, Bit Digital Inc., a crypto infrastructure firm, recently increased its ETH portfolio to 120,306 ETH, worth roughly $465 million. The increase comes after the firm acquired 19,683 ETH, using funds raised through a $67.3 million equity offering.
