Kamala Harris Adopts Coinbase for Crypto Donations: Report

Coinbase's CFO revealed that Harris is adopting Coinbase Commerce to accept crypto donations for campaign efforts.

Kamala Harris

Coinbase’s chief financial officer (CFO), Alesia Haas, revealed that the United States Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris will adopt Coinbase Commerce to welcome crypto donations to her campaign, a Fortune report showed on Wednesday.

“She is accepting crypto donations. She’s using Coinbase Commerce now to accept crypto for her own campaign,” Haas echoed in a conversation with Peter Christiansen, Citigroup’s director of payments.

The latest information comes a few weeks after Harris unveiled the “Crypto for Harris” advocacy group to attract the attention of 40 million Americans holding crypto assets.

Democratic Party and Crypto

The Democratic Party has shown minimal interest in crypto assets before now. Under President Joe Biden’s administration, the Democratic government permitted financial agencies to bring charges on crypto-focused platforms.

Since Harris became the Democratic presidential nominee in July, she has led the party in embracing crypto for campaign purposes. Later that month, members of the Democratic caucus signed a letter promoting blockchain adoption.

Despite the latest comment from Coinbase’s CFO, Harris’ advocacy group, “Crypto for Harris,” disclosed that they were unaware of the presidential candidate’s decision to accept crypto. Harris’ fundraising website also does not show such an integration.

Instead of welcoming the idea, various crypto community members on X dismissed Harris’ potential crypto embrace as a political stunt that won’t last. One even said that she could use the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s chairman, Gary Gensler, to “punish” Coinbase through lawsuits.

Trump Winning Crypto Community

Unlike Harris’ efforts to embrace crypto, various crypto users have welcomed Donald Trump’s campaign. Trump, who represents the Republican Party, has promised to ensure crypto is adopted on a wider scale in the country. He once teased that he would pay off the U.S. debt using Bitcoin. He has also earned the attention of top crypto figures like the Winklevoss twins and Kraken’s Jesse Powell.

In a recent report, Trump promoted a crypto project called the DeFiant Ones. The project is regarded as a family business since it is tied to the presidential candidate’s sons.
