Bitcoin is increasingly becoming a mainstream asset, with corporate adoption accelerating since early 2024. Clearer regulations and growing institutional interest are driving this trend.

This shift is reflected in corporate holdings, which have grown sharply over the past year. A recent report from financial services firm River shows that, as of August 2025, businesses held approximately 1.3 million BTC, up from 510,000 BTC in January 2024. The total value of these holdings exceeds $130 billion, while Bitcoin’s market capitalization has more than doubled to $2.24 trillion.

Corporate and Institutional Adoption Expands

Regulatory confidence in Bitcoin has improved, with bipartisan support emerging at both the state and federal levels. New accounting and tax guidelines have eased earlier concerns that previously limited corporate holdings.

This improved clarity has encouraged more companies to adopt Bitcoin. In just 20 months, the number of publicly listed firms holding BTC has grown from 39 to 158. Among major corporations, S&P 500 companies increased from 1 to 4, while Fortune 500 firms rose from 2 to 3, reflecting broader acceptance.

Institutional interest has also expanded, with top U.S. investment firms and hedge funds offering Bitcoin ETFs. Companies like Fidelity, Invesco, and BlackRock, which are providing these products, signal growing mainstream credibility.

Businesses Boost Bitcoin Holdings in September

Major corporations and financial institutions are continuing to expand their Bitcoin exposure. BlackRock recently purchased over $362 million in Bitcoin in early September. Notably, $289.8 million of this was bought on September 3 alone, highlighting sustained interest from large financial players.

Michael Saylor’s firm, Strategy, also boosted its reserves, acquiring 4,048 BTC between August 26 and September 1. Its total holdings now reach 636,505 BTC, valued at nearly $47 billion at current prices.

Japanese company Metaplanet strengthened its treasury by buying 1,009 BTC on September 1, bringing its total to 20,000 BTC. This makes it the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury in Japan and the sixth-largest worldwide.

Remarkably, these acquisitions show that Bitcoin is moving beyond niche status and becoming a recognized component of corporate balance sheets.
